Review: Double Jalapeño Double Cheeseburger from P. Terry’s
Bottom Line: The customized Double Jalapeño Double Cheeseburger from P. Terry’s may not bring much heat, but it delivers a heck of a good burger.
P. Terry’s is a growing burger chain that got its start in Austin, TX, and is now expanding throughout the state and gaining quite a reputation. It began when owners Kathy and Patrick Terry opened their first location in 2005, trying to re-create the magic of a small-town burger stand from the ’50s and ’60s. The menu is pretty simple, focusing mostly on burgers, fries, and shakes, and they don’t really highlight any spicy items. But they do offer both grilled and pickled jalapeños, so I customized my own Double Jalapeño Double Cheeseburger. Here’s what that included:
2 100% All-Natural Black Angus Beef Patties, 2 Slices of American Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Special Sauce, adding on grilled and pickled jalapeños.
The burger is not very big, but it is plenty dense, and it will certainly fill you up. Those patties are on the greasy side, but they use fresh meat with no hormones or antibiotics, and the beef is seasoned quite well. The American cheese adds the expected creaminess and sharpness, and the veggies are nice and fresh, though soaked in the juices from the meat. The “special sauce” adds some creaminess along with a touch of sweetness and tang.
The jalapeños mostly get lost in the mix, and you only notice them from a few pricks of heat. I really didn’t detect much difference between the two types, though I did get some tang from the pickled version.
Heat-wise, this is nothing that is going to send you screaming from the room. Even though I doubled up on the jalapeños, that did not even get this to Mild on my scale. But they do make a heck of a good, greasy fast-food burger, so why not add a little heat to it?
Nutrition-wise, the Double Cheeseburger tallies up to 743 calories (the jalapeños won’t add much to that), which is on the high side for a fast-food entrée. Then, when you add on those fries (386 cals for a regular order), you zoom past one thousand and will need to be scheduling some extra time at the gym. And don’t even be looking at that chocolate shake (745 cals for a 16 oz.) unless you are planning on doing several days of penance.
The jalapeños are a regular option for customizing your burger, so none of this will be disappearing to Limited-Time-Only-Ville. And I believe P. Terry’s keeps a pretty stable menu without all the special promotions. They definitely make a darn good Double Cheeseburger, and adding those jalapeños spices it up nicely. And at $5.25 for the burger (plus 90 cents to double up on the peppers), that is a heck of a deal for quality fast food. So if you see a P. Terry’s in your area, I suggest stopping by and enjoying a blast from the past!
