The Chicken Sandwich Wars: Buffalo Wild Wings Classic Chicken Sandwich

Buffalo Wild Wings is of course known for its wings, and that establishment definitely has some mighty tasty(and hot)  wings. But any place frying up one part of the chicken can certainly figure out how to fry up some poultry breast and put it on a sandwich, and that’s big business these days (of course, wings are too). The chicken sandwich is actually nothing new at BWW, they just have a really good deal going right now, and it’s worth bringing it to the attention of those looking for some spicy eats at an affordable price.

BWW’s Classic Chicken Sandwich includes a hand-breaded deep-fried chicken breast, pickles, mayonnaise, and Swiss cheese held together inside a Challah bun. You can “Make It Wild” at no extra cost–which means they add their Wild sauce–and that is the way to go if you want to spice this up. The current deal includes the sandwich and a “regular” order of fries (it’s really a large) for $5.99. That’s a price point that beats most fast food joints these days.

The chicken breast is not Popeye’s size, but still a decent portion. The filet fills out the bun and the meat is juicy and cooked through quite well. It does not have too much breading, which means not much crunch, but it still adds a decent taste. The pickles provide the requisite tang, and worked well on the sandwich. Interestingly enough, the Swiss cheese is not in the list of ingredients, but it was included with my sandwich and was a nice addition. Most of the breaded chicken sandwiches out there do not come with cheese, but it gives it a sharp bite and that little something extra.  (If it wasn’t meant to be there, it should be.)

On its own, the chicken breast has a little spice, but not much. The Wild sauce is what kicks this up and makes it a must have for spicy food lovers. That is one of their hottest sauces (though not the highest heat level) and goes quite well with the sandwich. It is basically an amped up version of their Buffalo sauce with the expected tanginess, and it approaches the hot heat level. I got mine to go and they put the sauce on the side which works quite well. That way you can regulate the amount you put on the sandwich and then mix the rest with ketchup for your fries. The Wild sauce will not send you running for a fire extinguisher, but it does pack some heat.

So let’s talk about the value of this deal. Six bucks for a good size chicken sandwich and a generous helping of pretty darn good fries. And for another buck, you can add a drink. So that’s seven Washingtons for a hefty combo meal. That’s about the same price as the combo at Popeye’s and Chick Fil A will run you almost a buck more. And those are fast food joints. Not sure why BWW is not advertising this deal more, but I recommend that you get in on it. (And if you dine-in at Happy Hour, you can get three dollar tall beers with it.)

Although, don’t make this a regular thing. Calorie-wise this comes in at over one thousand and the total sodium is off the scale. It’s a pretty hefty amount of cals and don’t fool yourself into believing you can split it into two meals. Once you bite into the sandwich and fries you will keep going until there is nothing but a few drops of sauce and some smudges of ketchup left.

Buffalo Wild Wings is one of my favorite of the wing chains and it is pretty much neck-and-neck with Wingstop in my book. And BWW has the hottest and best sauce among the chains as far as I am concerned. Not certain why I have not covered their Blazin’ Wings at this site yet, but I plan on rectifying that in the next few weeks. Though I will probably do that chicken sandwich deal at least one more time before then because it is a limited offer and could go away at any time. I suggest you check it out as well.
