Bottom Line: The Cheesy Jalapeno Sausage & Egg Biscuit from McDonald’s brings quite a kick to one of their breakfast staples.

I don’t know if you like spicy first thing in the morning, but I’m usually up for something that delivers a bit of heat. I don’t necessarily want to set my mouth on fire because I will be having my cup of coffee as well, but waking up to a little burn can be nice. And the fast food industry has been accommodating that lately by adding more and more spicy options to their breakfast menus, with the Cheesy Jalapeno Sausage & Egg Biscuit from McDonalds as one of the latest arrivals.

That one borrows two of the ingredients added to the new Spicy Quarter Pounder (more on that one here) to kick up one of the standard breakfast items available at the Golden Arches by adding jalapenos and cheddar cheese sauce to the sausage and egg biscuit. They also have a version with bacon instead of the sausage.

To start off with, this is a pretty substantial breakfast sandwich, not one of those wimpy things you might expect from the drive thru. And those jalapenos greet you right away and they have a kick along with some notable sourness. The biscuit is buttery and flaky with good, homestyle flavor, and it reminds me of the ones Popeyes is famous for (I know that statement may be considered sacrilege by some). The cheese sauce does not overwhelm, but it brings some creaminess and cheddar sharpness. The sausage has a salty kick with some savory notes and there is a hint of maple in there as well (this is the same patty they use for the McGriddles). The egg is mild and tender and blends well with the other ingredients. It is not the fresh egg they crack on the griddle for the McMuffin, but still okay for liquid eggs.

As for the heat, the jalapenos they are using definitely have a bite, and I would put this at the Medium level on my scale. That is a little hotter than I usually prefer with my morning coffee, but I’m not complaining. And if you like a good boost of heat first thing in the morning, this is definitely for you. It won’t set your mouth ablaze, but it will wake you up.

Calorie-wise, the sandwich comes in at a rather hefty 570 cals. And you know you are going to get that order of hashbrowns as well, so that tacks on another 150 cals. Be sure you get black coffee with that, otherwise you will be adding even more to the tally. Just the sandwich alone is a fair amount of calories for breakfast (along with 38g of fat!), so plan on a salad for lunch after ordering one of these.

In my area, the biscuit sandwich goes for $5.89 by itself which is somewhat pricy for a fast food breakfast. But the combo is only $7.39, and you can also look for deals in their app to make it more affordable.

As with the Cheesy Jalapeno Bacon QPC, the spicy breakfast sandwiches are visiting from Limited-Time-Only-Ville. But it is only the jalapenos and cheddar cheese sauce that set these apart from regular menu items, so hopefully good sales will convince McDonald’s to keep those ingredients in the stores. Go try one while you can, though, because the fast food industry has a habit of yanking things like this off the menu without much notice. This spicy sausage egg and cheese biscuit definitely kicks things up first thing in the morning, and it is worth a try.
