Quick Review: Mike’s Hot Honey Diablo Sauce from Taco Bell
Bottom Line: Mike’s Hot Honey Diablo Sauce from Taco Bell delivers a nice twist with a sweet-and-sour take on one of their hottest sauces.
Mike’s Hot Honey strikes again! That company’s marketing team must be putting in double-time because they have their hot honey everywhere! They’re putting it on pizza, they’re adding it to chips, they’re drizzling it on sandwiches, they’re even putting it in breakfast cereals . . . okay . . . maybe not that last one. But don’t be surprised if they try it at some point!
Most recently, Mike has teamed up with Taco Bell and added his hot honey to their Diablo Sauce for a combination that delivers a kick. The Diablo Sauce is the Bell’s hottest option among the packets they hand out for free, and it brings a good richness and earthiness from the mixture of chilis and spices that go into it. The hot honey delivers a nice sweetness, and there’s a little sour in there as well but that does not overwhelm. And while you might think it would amp up the heat, it actually counters the kick. Diablo Sauce gets close to Hot on my scale, but the hot honey version is just above Medium. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, because the regular Diablo tends to dominate the flavor of whatever it’s added to, while this version acts more as a complement.
It’s one of the sauce options with their new Crispy Chicken Nuggets (you can read my review of those here), and it goes quite well with those bite-sized poultry pieces. It also pairs nicely with the Nacho Fries, much better than the cheese sauce they come with. I don’t know that I’d put this on a taco or burrito or their other Mexican options, though, as the taste profile doesn’t mesh very well. But their new Crispy Chicken Strips are now available, and I can see pairing this with those.
Take note that this new sauce is not a freebie like the packets they usually have at the condiment bar. It comes in little dipping cups, and they’ll include it at no extra charge with an order of the Crispy Chicken Nuggets, but otherwise it will cost you 60 cents. Also note that this is on loan from Limited-Time-Only-Ville and will be returning there at some point—probably in the near future.
