Quick Review: Fiery Lime Boneless Wings from Wingstop
Bottom Line: The new Fiery Lime Sauce from Wingstop delivers good flavor without the expected sourness, and it has some heat.
Wingstop has been slinging its spicy poultry parts since the 1990s, and they have a decent selection of sauces and rubs on their menu, including rotating flavors. Among those, they have added the Fiery Lime sauce this fall, which is inspired by the spicy margaritas that have become quite popular of late. I picked up an order of wings there last week and decided to add the new selection as one of the four flavors for my bundle. I will say that the combination of spicy and lime/lemon is typically not a favorite of mine because it tends to be heavier on the pucker than the piquant. But I was pleasantly surprised by this new offering from Wingstop.
The lime taste is there right away, but it is not sour; it’s more refreshing with a bit of sweetness, sort of like a margarita. The hot sauce tang is there as well, and it blends nicely with the other flavors. If you think this might be like the Fiery Limón Cheetos or similar products, it’s not. It does a good job of blending the taste of the drink with a spicy kick, and it goes nicely with their always well-cooked wings. They also did not coat the wing with this sauce as heavily as they do with most of their others, so it did not overpower, and there was still some crunch to the crust.
As for the heat, it sneaks up on you, starting with just a little sting that builds to a bit over Medium on my scale. They show it as three out of five flames on their sauce list, which is about in line with the other offerings they have at that level. So it won’t set your mouth on fire, but it does deliver a nice burn.
I got this as part of their Boneless Wing Meal Deal for Two, which includes 20 wings with your choice of up to four flavors, along with a large order of fries and two dips for $17.99. Considering what you pay for fast food these days, that’s a heck of a deal, and it ended up being more than enough food for two people. The Fiery Lime Sauce is a limited-time offering, but hopefully it proves popular enough to make it to the permanent menu.
