Review: Spicy Royal Burrito from Egg Tuck
Bottom Line: The Spicy Royal Burrito from Egg Tuck is one “Eggcellent Burrito” (their words, but I agree), and it brings quite a kick with it.
I have said before that I am not really looking for too much in the way of spiciness for breakfast because it does not go too well with my morning coffee, and I will be having my morning coffee. Still, I don’t mind a kick first thing, and I typically top my eggs with hot sauce or salsa. I recently happened to stumble upon a relatively new chain called Egg Tuck that focuses on breakfast and offers egg sandwiches and burritos inspired by Korean street food, and I stopped in to give it a try. Everything looked good, and their sandwiches are the signature items, but I ended up going with the Spicy Royal Burrito. Here is what that comes with:
Signature very soft fresh scrambled eggs, crispy tater tots, house-made sriracha aioli, spicy signature beef patty, cheddar cheese, grilled onions, served in a flour tortilla
The patty they refer to is Korean beef, and it is rich and meaty with just a bit of gochujang funk. It may seem a little odd for a breakfast burrito, but it worked out pretty well. The eggs—which are their namesake and signature item—are light and fluffy, practically custard-like little clouds. You may think scrambled eggs are just scrambled eggs, but Egg Tuck takes those to the next level.
The cabbage is an odd addition for breakfast, but it adds a nice bit of earthiness and some texture. The potatoes are soft and do not deliver any crunch, but they work well in the mix, adding some flavor. The sriracha aioli seems to get lost amidst the other items, as do the grilled onions, and it would be nice to have more tang and sweetness, but this is still quite a delicious burrito. The tortilla holds everything together well enough and has a nice chew.
There is definitely some heat in this breakfast burrito, getting above Medium on my scale. It is a little more than I prefer in the morning, but I was still okay with it as I gobbled it down. The beef delivers some burn, and I am guessing the sauce kicks things up as well. So be sure to have some water or juice along with your coffee to temper the heat!
They do not show the calories for their menu items, but I can assure you that this is not diet food! It is a large breakfast burrito packed full of stuff, and I am guessing it is at least 800 cals, if not breaking a thousand. I originally thought of getting the tots on the side, but the burrito itself was more than enough.
It was not cheap at $10.49, and a coffee tacked on another $3.50, but for the quality and size, I would definitely say that it was worth it. The chain got its start in California as a pop-up, but has since opened several brick-and-mortar locations and expanded beyond that state. There are only a few stores outside CA, though, and the one I went to was in the small town of Temple, TX, of all places. I am hoping they continue to expand and open a place closer to me, because I would certainly love to try the sandwiches and other items on their menu. You can check for a location near you on their website.
