Here Are Some Craft Hot Sauce Suggestions You Can Give as Gifts This Holiday Season
The gift-giving season is upon us, and plenty of people will be buying those generic hot sauce sets this year for friends and family members who like spicy foods. But my suggestion is to walk right past those (more on why here), and instead look for some craft hot sauces that they will appreciate much more. The fact is that these days there are quite a number of small to medium-sized companies putting out handmade sauces with quality ingredients, and you can purchase these without breaking the bank. Some have managed to find their way into grocery stores, while others are only found in specialty markets or online. It can be hard to track down these craft sauces, but there are plenty of them out there, and even if you put a little extra effort and spend a bit more money on them, they will be appreciated by lovers of spicy food. Following are a few suggestions:
The Spicy Gnome:
This maker of sauces, seasonings, salsa, and more more got its start several years back and it certainly seems to be thriving. I sampled three of their sauces back in 2022 (read my review here) and was quite impressed. They make their products from all-natural ingredients, and have continued to expand their offerings. The trio sampler which includes Enchanted Flame, Fine Hot Sauce, and Dragon’s Tears (the ones that I reviewed) is a pretty good deal at $24. They also have a Spicy Trio Sampler which includes Dragon’s Tears, Viking’s Revenge, and Odin’s Wrath which goes for a little more at $39 (I have not tried those latter two yet, but they are on my list). I have not been disappointed with anything from this company, and I highly recommend them. You can view the products they currently have available here.
Castaway Sauce: My son picked up a couple of this company’s sauces for me while he was in Florida, and after I gave good marks to those (you can read my review here), Castaway sent two more of their selections for me to try (you can read about those here). These are some really good sauces, and I like the fact that they sell them at an affordable price (most are $5.99 a bottle). Often you are paying ten bucks or more for this type of product, so it is nice to get a break for the wallet in the current economy. They have a gift set that has all four of their sauces for $25, which is quite affordable and so much better than those generic sets. You can shop their products at their website.
Torchbearer Sauce: This company has become rather popular in the past ten years or so, and you can find many of their products in the stores. I reviewed their sampler pack with three of their hottest sauces, and was quite impressed with it as those delivered on the heat (you can about read that here). I have found that one and an eight-pack at World Market, and they have a ten-pack and twelve-pack (plus plenty of other selections) available on their website. They also sell barbeque sauces, seasonings, mustard, and more, so you should be able to track down plenty of gift ideas from this company. If you can’t find them in local specialty stores, their products are also available on Amazon.com.
Tabanero: I discovered this Mexico-based hot sauce company a few years back and have been hooked on their products ever since. They are now getting to the point that they are pretty widely available, and that’s good because they put out some quality offerings. I tried their Hot Sauce Challenge Gift Set a couple of years back (you can read my review here), and that is a good introduction to their sauces that include all-natural ingredients and are based around habanero chilis from the Tabasco region of Mexico. And that set also makes a heck of good gift at ten bucks. You can purchase it and other products directly from their website if you can’t find them in specialty stores near you. And their sauces are also available on Amazon.com. Walmart was selling the sampler bottles of several of their sauces for a buck each last year, but I have not since them this season yet.
