[post_content] => I have already written at length about those generic hot sauce gift sets you find this time of year and suggested that you not give those unless they are a gag gift (more on that here). If you are looking to give a gift to someone who really enjoys spicy food, you are better off seeking out craft hot sauce sets (like Hoff's or The Spicy Gnome) or looking for sets from known brands. At least with those, you know you are giving quality sauces and something that lovers of spicy foods would prefer. Here are a few examples:

Tabasco Products: Tabasco is a well-known company that has been in business in Louisiana since the 1800s. They make a variety of sauces and there are quite a number of gift sets that you can find on Amazon.com. There are variety sets with multiple sauce flavors and there are also the big bottles as well as the tiny bottles (the latter could make for fun stocking stuffers). Heck, you can just go up to your local store and buy one of each bottle they have and make a fun little gift basket, though searching online will give you a larger selection. Tabasco makes quality sauces and any lover of hot foods would enjoy getting a nice variety of these during the holidays.

Yellowbird Sauces: Yellowbird is an Austin-based company that makes some pretty darn good sauces that are all-natural and made from chilis they grow themselves. You may be able to find them in your local grocery store (they could be with the hot sauce or the barbeque sauce), but if not, they are widely available online. Amazon offers sets that range from three to five sauces, though be sure to shop the prices because some sellers have the exact same thing cheaper than others. These are highly-rated sauces made right here in the U S of A and should be a perfect gift for someone who likes the heat!

Secret Aardvark Sauces: This company is another maker of craft hot sauces, and they have gained a lot of attention in recent years because of their quality products. They are located in Portland, Oregon and a portion of the profits from their sauces goes back to supporting their community. They have several flavors to choose from, all of which deliver on the flavor. The Habanero, Red Scorpion, and Reaper sauces definitely amp up the heat level, but they also have some like the Smoky Chipotle that are on the lower end of the heat scale. If you can't find these in your local store, or the selection is minimal, Amazon and other online retailers have several sets available.

Dave's Hot Sauce: Are you ready to really turn up the heat? Then give the gift of Dave's. This company puts out what I consider to be the benchmark for the extract-based, insane heat sauces. Dave's manages to still keep some flavor in the sauces even though just one drop will set your mouth on fire. And if you aren't looking for something that hot, they even make some milder sauces that are pretty good. But Dave's is best known for the Insanity sauce and the variations of that which make it even hotter. Most likely, you won't find many of these at your local store, but Amazon and other online retailers do have quite a selection.

Melinda's Hot Sauce: These sauces are widely available and you will often find them in discount stores. But these are still good sauces and worth buying. The company is based in Texas, but the sauces are now made in Costa Rica. They have quite a variety from mild (Garlic Sauce) to beyond fiery (Scorpion Pepper Sauce), and these are quite affordable. You can find the sauces in regular bottles as well as squeeze bottle varieties, and it is likely that your local store has several to choose from. But for a fairly extensive selection, check out the offerings at Amazon.

World Market Has Plenty of Spicy Hot Sauce Gift Options

[post_content] => The holiday season is upon us, and as you are shopping for gifts, you may see one of those generic hot sauce samplers and decide to get it for a friend or family member who likes spicy things. But my advice is to pass that on by (I go into more detail on that here). Instead of these mass-produced concoctions, look for name-brand sauces that are a known quantity or craft sauces. And if you have a World Market near you, then you should be able to find plenty of good options. I will note before proceeding that I am not getting paid to promote World Market products, nor are there any affiliate links in this article—I just happen to like the store. (But hey, World Market, if you want to pay me to promote your products or send me some affiliate links, give me a call.)

Most World Markets have a shelf dedicated to hot sauces, and you can also find other sauces throughout the store. The Asian shelf will generally have several types of sriracha sauce, and the Italian shelf will have some bottles of Calabrian pepper sauces and/or pastes. They also have a section with sampler-size bottles, and you can put together a nice gift set there. (Though check your local Walmart first, because they may have some of the same sauces cheaper. More on that here.)

World Market also has some hot sauce sets, but you will want to be careful when selecting from those. They have some name-brand and craft sauces, but they also have the generic sets, so pay attention to what you are buying. Take a look at the set above as an example. It claims this is a "Gourmet Hot Sauce Assortment," but there are no recognizable names attached. If you zoom in on the back side, it says "Product of the U.S.A.," but below that, it says "Packed in China." So, even though the company itself may be in the U.S., the sauces are made in China. If you look at the ingredients, you see these all are made with distilled vinegar, some sort of pepper mash, and a few other ingredients. So, they will be vinegary sauces of varying heat and flavor, but the difference will be minimal. These may actually not be bad sauces (when they drop the price after Christmas, I may pick it up), but there are much better options.

If you look at the picture above, this has several other sets, including some known brands. That Hoff set is a pretty good deal at $29.99 and would make a good gift (you can read my review of their sauces here). The Hot Ones Party Pack is a bit pricey at $59.99 (Sam’s had it for $50 last year), but that is still a pretty good set (you can read my review of it here). The Torchbearer three-pack makes a nice stocking stuffer at $16.99 (read my review of it here), and I am not familiar with the Murder Hornet brand but will probably check it out (that runs $29.99). The Culinary Passport set is just another generic collection, so you can pass it on by. And while that Melinda’s set is a good sampler, it’s kind of pricey at $24.99. Check Walmart first because I got it for $9.99 last year (more on that one here).

So, World Market gives you plenty of options for hot sauce this time of year, and they have quite a few other spicy items throughout the store that can make a nice gift basket. Any friend or family member who likes foods that bring some heat will certainly appreciate the extra time and care you put into that gift.

[post_content] => The holiday time of year is upon us and you will almost certainly see those generic hot sauce gift sets in big box stores and gift shops calling out to you. But if you know somebody who likes spicy food and you are looking to buy them a gift, do them a favor and pass those by (as I discuss in more detail here.) Instead, buy something with better quality and taste, and if you have a Trader Joe's market near you then you will have plenty of selections to choose from.

That company describes itself as "a national chain of neighborhood grocery stores", and even though that sounds self-contradictory, they offer quality products to their customers. TJ's is also a good place to find spicy stuff that you can package together into a nice little gift basket, and I have several suggestions below. Now I should note that I don't get paid to promote any of TJ's products.  (Hey Trader Joe's, if you want to pay me to promote your products, I'm all ears).  But I am more than willing to recommend them because they put out some really good stuff that spicy food lovers will enjoy.

1. Habanero Hot Sauce: This spicy bottle of goodness is one that typically surprises people. If you aren't aware that TJ's is a good place to find foods that bring the heat, you might pass it on by. But once you have sampled the sauce, it is going to become a staple in your pantry. It delivers that distinct habanero flavor along with a nice sweetness and an immediate kick. There is also some tang from the sauce, though not too much, and it has a slight garlicky finish that rounds out the taste experience quite nicely. And along with all that, this sauce really brings quite a kick. I always have a bottle of it around, and I recommend that you get one as a gift and one to keep. (Read my full review of the sauce here.)

2. Italian Bomba Hot Pepper Sauce: This is another sauce that I discovered at TJ's which has since become a regular in my pantry. It has good red pepper taste from the Calabrian chilis along with just a bit of sweetness. It also has hints of olives, likely coming from the extra virgin olive oil and maybe also from the fermentation of the peppers. There is also a bit of a tang that probably comes from the citric acid. The sauce has some heat, but it is not what I would call super hot, closer to the Medium heat level. But I can't eat Italian food without it anymore, and I always add a little bit of it to my spaghetti sauce. (You can read my full review here.)

3. Green Dragon Sauce: This sauce is made with jalapenos and tomatillos but it has a slight Asian tinge to it as well. There must be something hidden in the spices because I don't see any ingredients that suggest that cuisine, but it is definitely there. It has the tartness you expect from tomatillos, and it has the tang from the vinegar along with some sweetness to balance that out. The jalapenos give it a kick, though it is not too hot as it is only slightly above Mild level. But taste-wise this is quite good and it pairs up very well with Asian food while also working well with other cuisines. (You can read my full review of both this and TJ's Sriracha sauce here.)

4. Jalapeno Sauce: This is one that I recently discovered and it will be turning into another TJ's regular for me. It is a creamy jalapeno sauce, but it has no dairy (it actually counts as vegan and the creaminess comes from the oil used). It has that good, rich jalapeno taste with a hint of roast chilis as well. And it has a kick that brings it to the Medium heal level and maybe beyond. They suggest that you use it as an enchilada sauce (those are going to be some spicy enchiladas!), but it is also really good on breakfast tacos/burritos and it would make a good (and spicy) substitute for mayonnaise. Note that they also have a red jalapeno sauce, but that is more like a Louisiana sauce and I consider the green version much better.

5. Chili Pepper Sauce: Not to be confused with the Red Jalapeno Sauce I mentioned above (which looks similar in the bottle), this one is also made from the scarlet pods but it has a heavy dose of chili powder. In fact, it tastes similar to a red enchilada sauce, though more intense. It also brings a notable tang from the vinegar. This would go particularly well with Mexican food or it could give a boost to a pot of chili con carne. Heat-wise it is a little below Medium-level, but it does have a kick to go along with its good taste.

And you need not stop with just the hot sauces. Trader Joe's has quite a number of spicy snacks (like the Crispy Thai Chilies & Sesame Seeds, more on those here), oils (like the Chili Sesame Oil), seasonings (like the Smoked Ghost Chili Flakes), and more that you could add into a gift basket.  The sauces are a good place to start, and be sure to get a bottle of each for yourself.  And whoever is on the receiving end of this gift will certainly appreciate it more than one of those generic hot sauce sets.

Don’t Buy Cheap, Generic Hot Sauce Gift Sets, Give Quality Sauces Instead

Bottom Line: Cheap hot sauce gift sets are often made overseas with low-quality ingredients and very little difference in flavor from bottle to bottle.  Give known brands or craft hot sauces instead.
It's that time of year and I will issue my annual warning as gift-giving season is now upon us.  Sure enough, at some point you will be walking through one of the big-box stores or a gift shop and see a hot sauce set that you want to buy for a friend or relative that happens to like spicy food. Well, I'm here to tell you: resist that urge! Just pass it on by and put a little more effort into a gift that the person can really enjoy. Why should you avoid these hot sauce gift sets? Because they are usually comprised of mass-produced sauces using low-quality ingredients with very little difference in the flavors. And often these come from places like China or other overseas producers of cheap products. That's not to say that because something comes from another country it is bad, but these come from countries that are just cranking out bargain-priced sets that are not really what they appear to be. Often these will have names like "Sauces of the World" or "Restaurant Hot Sauce Sampler" or "Food Truck Hot Sauces" or that sort of thing. But these are usually all vinegar-based sauces with only slight variances in the ingredients from bottle to bottle and the only true difference may be food coloring. Read closely and you will see wording like "inspired by" hot sauces from around the world or famous restaurants for food trucks or similar verbiage. But these are usually not branded sauces coming from a known establishment. These might be good as a gag gift for a White Elephant Party or something like that, and it is not necessarily that the hot sauces are bad, it's just that they mostly taste like very basic vinegar-based sauces. These are not for people who truly appreciate spicy foods, and it is best to avoid them while instead seeking out a set from a place that is known for making good hot sauce. How do you know if you are getting a quality hot sauce gift set? First of all, if you find the set in some place like a wholesale club or a store that does not specialize in gourmet foods and/or sauces, it is probably best avoided. If you recognize the brand like Tabasco or Cholula or Dave's, then you should be okay. If it is a sampler pack of various brands, read the label and make sure they come from the original maker and they are not "inspired by" certain sauces. If you can't find any information on where the sauces come from, and/or there is just a generic list of ingredients, avoid that set. And if it comes from China, definitely avoid that set. If you want to give a gift of hot sauce that people will really remember, then select some from craft makers that truly care about the quality of their product. In HEB in Texas, you can find Yellowbird or Secret Aardvark or other top-shelf brands and perhaps make a gift set of your own. You can also find all sorts of sampler packs online. As I did last year, I will be highlighting gift sets that include quality sauces over the coming weeks, most of which are made right here in the U S of A. These are definitely good options if you are looking for a gift that brings the spice. Just avoid the urge to buy those cheap sets, and maybe sample a few sauces yourself to decide which are the best ones to give to others this holiday season. [post_content] => It's just a few days before Christmas and you may still be looking for a last-minute gift option for someone you know who loves spicy food. Might I suggest Fuego Box which is a hot sauce of the month club that offers carefully selected craft sauces from across the world. These are not the generic concoctions made in places like China and thrown together in a cheap set, these are mostly small-batch sauces made by people who care about the products that they produce. I have to admit that I have not tried this service yet, but I have known people who have, and they have been very pleased with the sauces they receive.

The basic subscription plan has three different tiers:

Dip Your Toe In: Box with one sauce that is mild to hot and is shipped every 30 days for $12.95 plus $5 shipping.

Sauce Lover: Box of three sauces that are mild to hot and is shipped every 30 or 90 days for $29.95 plus $5 shipping.

Pain Seeker: Box of two sauces that are extra hot and is shipped every 30 or 90 days for $28.95 plus $5 shipping.

All of these can be cancelled at anytime. A friend of mine did the Pain Seeker subscription for a while and got some really good sauces from that one.

And if you are looking for a gift subscription, Fuego Box has you covered on that as well. They have quite a number of options from one month to a year that you can pay for in advance at this link. These do not auto-renew and the person you sign up will receive an email notifying them of the gift.  You can also buy individual sauces and seasonings or gifts sets at this link.  Those may not make it by Christmas day, though.

This is definitely a nice gift for someone who likes spicy foods and from what I have seen the service is pretty highly rated. So if you need something quick, browse through the gift subscriptions and you should find something that will spice up the holidays for your friends and family.

Bottom Line: The Tabanero Hot Sauce Challenge makes for a good gift with quality sauces that range from Medium to Insane levels on the heat scale.
As Christmas Day approaches and you find yourself doing some last-minute shopping, you might be tempted to grab one of those generic hot sauce gift sets for someone who enjoys spicy foods. But don’t do it! (More on that here.) Instead, seek out hot sauces that are not cheaply made in China or elsewhere, and Amazon actually has a perfect option that can be shipped within a few days. While browsing through the site, I came across the Tabanero Hot Sauce Challenge Set and decided to try it out since it's only ten bucks. The set includes four 1.75 oz bottles of sauces from the company, ranging from medium heat to extremely hot, and the challenge is to try each of them in order. Tabanero is based in Florida and sources its habanero chilis from Tabasco, Mexico, to create its first-rate sauces. After sampling each of the four in this set, here are my comments: Original: This has the tang you'd expect from a hot sauce, along with a notable sweetness, and I'd say it strikes a nice balance between both. It isn't too vinegary, as the company’s owner, Carl De Santis, aimed to de-emphasize that in his sauces (more on that at their website). This one also features the habanero flavor from the main chili used, although it's in the background and not too distinct. I would have preferred more of the chili pepper flavor in the mix, but this is still quite a tasty sauce. The heat level approaches Medium on my scale, and most people will find this one not too challenging. Extra Hot: Taste-wise, this is similar to the Original sauce, but with much more of the habanero flavor. That happens to be my favorite chili (What? You don’t have a favorite chili pepper?), so I really like this sauce, and it will become a regular in my pantry. It is similar in taste to Melinda’s Xxxtra Hot and Marie Sharp’s Habanero Sauce (two of my regular lineup), although it's definitely not a direct copy of either. Heat-wise, it goes past Medium and reaches the Hot level. The average person might struggle with this one, but chiliheads should love it. XXX: This one adds Ghost and Scorpion chilis to the mix, and that's apparent right away. It has that rich, peppery taste often found in hotter sauces, and the heat is immediately noticeable. The flavor is good, but you won’t get to enjoy it too much as the sauce quickly surpasses the Fiery level, and the heat takes over. The average person should probably pass this one by, and even lovers of spicy food will use it in small quantities. Dragon’s Breath: This one seems to be basically the same as the Extra Hot sauce in terms of ingredients, except it includes some Dragon’s Breath chili (which, honestly, I hadn't even heard of before). That takes it into the realm of pure pain, tasting somewhat like Dave’s Insanity Sauce with added habaneros. You'll only get a fleeting hint of the flavor, though, as your mouth quickly goes numb from the heat. I firmly place this one at the Insane level, if not higher, and you’ll only use it one drop at a time. This one presents a challenge even to chiliheads, but I can report that I survived. Amazon offers two other Tabanero sets as well, delivering more moderate heat levels. They have the Variety Sampler, which includes their Original, Extra Hot, Spicy Agave, and Curry Habanero Sauces. Then there is a Mini Hot Sauce Gift Set that offers a different variety, including Peach Bourbon, Sweet & Spicy, Key Lime Habanero, and Sriracha Honey. So, you have several options with varying heat levels and flavors. Regardless, you know you're giving a gift of quality sauces, and all three of these sets make for good stocking stuffers. I should also note that Walmart currently has a hot sauce sampler rack in their stores (more on that here), and they offer the Original and Extra Hot Sauce for only a buck each. [post_content] => We are in the thick of the gift-giving season, and there are plenty of those generic hot sauce sets on the shelves this time of year. But pass those on by (as I discuss in more detail here) and look for craft hot sauces or sets from known brands. Following are several that I have seen of late that should certainly make good gifts for lovers of spicy foods.

Hot Ones Party Pack

This is from the guys behind the Hot Ones YouTube channel and has a nice sampling of the sauces they are famous for. The five included are their Classic Garlic Fresno sauce, Los Calientes Verde, Los Calientes Rojo, The Last Dab: Apollo, and Buffalo Hot Sauce. Of these, I have only tried The Last Dab, but it is one of the best superhot sauces out there. The set is currently available at Sam's priced at $49.95 for five 5 oz bottles, which may seem a bit high, but these are craft hot sauces. And these sauces usually go for fifteen bucks a bottle and more (The Last Dab is fetching around $30 per bottle on Amazon), so ten bucks a bottle is not bad. I have definitely added this one to my Christmas list.

Yellowbird Classic Hot Sauce Variety Set

Yellowbird sauces are made just up the road in Austin, Texas and these are always reliable. This set collects five of their most popular sauces: Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce, Blue Agave Sriracha, Habanero Hot Sauce, Jalapeno Hot Sauce, and Serrano Hot Sauce. It is currently available for $34.99 on Amazon for five of the 9.8 oz bottles which is a decent price for this collection. Yellowbird is a favorite of mine (hey, it's a Texas original) and you can read my review of their Ghost Pepper Sauce here.

Cholula Hot Sauce Lover Gift Set

Cholula is a well-known maker of hot sauce and a pretty reliable one as well. You can find their original sauce pretty much everywhere these days (and you can read my review of it here) and they have several variations on that as well. This set includes the Original, Chipotle, Chili Garlic, Green Pepper, Chili Lime and Sweet Habanero and it is a nice selection of the flavors they offer. These are the 5 oz bottles and the set sells for $23.62 on Amazon, so that is a decent price for all six of these together. These are milder sauces (the Sweet Habanero is the hottest and only gets to about Medium on my scale), but they are all still quite good and should give a kick to the holiday season!

Tabasco Chrome Caddy Gift Set

For some reason, the Tabasco gift sets fetch a pretty high price so I won't recommend them because you can make up your own collection by buying the varieties available on the shelf at your local store. But this fun little set includes a chrome caddy along with eight of the 5 oz bottles (plus four of the mini Tabascos), so it should make for a nice gift and a good sampler of the sauces offered by the McIlhenny Company. The sauces included are Original, Green Jalapeno, Chipotle, Habanero, Buffalo, Sriracha, Sweet & Spicy, and Garlic Pepper. It sells for $59.99 on Amazon, and hot sauce lovers should certainly enjoy it.

Spicy Gnome Sampler Set

While I am listing off hot sauce gift sets, I have to give a shoutout to at least one of the craft sauce makers, and Spicy Gnome is a favorite of mine. They put out several sauces and rubs and other spicy products and they have two samplers available. Their Trio Sample Pack includes the Fine Sauce (Fresno Red based), Enchanted Flame (Serrano based), and Dragon's Tears (Habanero based) and you can read my review of that set here. Their Spicy Trio Sample Pack includes the Dragon's Tears, Viking's Revenge (Ghost Pepper Based W/a hint of Orange), and Odin's Wrath (No "Base" just HEAT - Habanero, Ghost, Reaper, and Scorpion). Anybody who likes spicy foods will certainly enjoy the sauces from this company. [post_content] => It’s the gift-giving time of year again, and you may have some friends or relatives who would appreciate receiving something that brings the heat. But please don’t buy those generic hot sauce gift sets that seem to pop up everywhere during this season (I go into more detail on those here). If you do some looking around, you can find plenty of good collections of hot sauce made (or put together your own) from quality ingredients that your friends or family members will really enjoy.

Just recently, I paid a visit to my local Walmart and found several hot sauce items that would make great gifts. I should note that I am not paid to promote that store’s products (hey Walmart, if you want to pay me to promote your products, I’m listening), but since the Sam Walton company is pretty much ubiquitous across the country, it’s worth letting you know what they have.

One of the biggest scores I found there is the Melinda’s Mini Liquid Spice Rack which is currently selling for only $9.99 in my area. That has ten 2 oz. squeeze bottles offering a nice selection of that company’s hot sauces. Included in the set are Thai Sweet Chili Sauce, Black Truffle Sauce, Green Sauce, Fire Roasted & Habanero Sauce, Ghost Pepper Wing Sauce, Mexicana Sauce, Cayenne Red Hot Sauce, Habanero Honey Mustard Sauce, XXXTra Hot Habanero Hot Sauce, and Pizza Hot Sauce. The suggested retail price for this set is $25, so ten bucks is a great deal and this makes a perfect gift for spice lovers.

I sampled six of the sauces in the set, and following are my thoughts on those:

Fire Roasted Garlic & Habanero: This one has a nice tang along with distinct habanero and garlic flavors. It also has a little bit of sweetness to it and a nice depth that probably comes from the roasting. And it brings some good heat, coming close to Hot on my scale.

Ghost Pepper Wing Sauce: This has the tang you expect from a wing sauce with a peppery kick. It delivers plenty of pucker without much sweetness to counterbalance, and it brings some heat going beyond Hot on my scale. This should certainly make some spicy and tasty wings.

Thai Sweet Chili Sauce: This has a definite garlic taste with some nice sweetness and some tang. It is not very hot, though, maybe Mild on my scale. But this would go well with egg rolls or dumplings (and might I suggest mixing in a little of the habanero sauce to kick it up).

Mexicana Sauce: This has a nice earthy taste with plenty of tang. It is very similar to Cholula or Valentina, though with more vinegar pucker. Heat-wise it comes in around Mild at best.

Pizza Hot Sauce: This one is heavy on the tang with some hints of tomato and just a little bit of sweetness. There is some garlic in there as well and I can see how this would go well with pizza. This one comes up to the Mild level.

XXXtra Hot Habanero Sauce: I tried this to see how it compares to the same sauce that comes in the 5 oz glass bottles (one of my favorites from Melinda's), and it is very close to that. The fragrant flavor of habanero comes through with a nice kick. There is some tang along with some sweetness to balance that out. And it definitely brings the heat, coming close to Hot on my scale. It is a little thicker than the sauce in the glass bottle, but otherwise very close to that one.

The Green Sauce, Cayenne Sauce, and Habanero Honey Mustard Sauce I have tried previously, and all three are quite good. I passed on the Black Truffle sauce because I am no fan of truffles and that one will end up in a gift basket for someone else. I found this set on the shelf where they have the other hot sauces, but it’s possible they may have a display in the store somewhere as well.

But the Melinda’s score was not the only thing I found at my Walmart. I had seen people posting pictures online of a hot sauce sampler display at the stores near them, and that is what prompted me to go in the first place. I did find it, but the display in my store was not as large as some of the ones I saw online. Still, it was worth the trip.

Basically, this is a collection of small sauce bottles all going for a dollar each. The one at my store had Melinda’s Jalapeno and Ghost Pepper Ketchup along with the Black Truffle Sauce, Pizza Hot Sauce, Ghost Pepper Wing Sauce, and Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. It also had Yellowbird Serrano Sauce, Tabanero Original and Extra Hot Sauce, Kinder’s Wing Sauce, and a few barbeque sauces that didn’t offer much spice.

If your store happens to have the larger display, I expect the selection will be more expansive. If you grab a bunch of these for a buck and maybe get that Melinda’s pack as well (they also average out to a buck each), you have the start of a nice gift set. Beyond that, Walmart has a lot of the standards on their hot sauce shelf, but you can certainly find some good selections for a spicy gift basket or some great stocking stuffers. And the person you give these to will certainly appreciate them more than those generic hot sauce sets that are so common this time of year.

Bottom Line: The Phoenix Fire, Vampire’s Bane, and Day Walker salsas from Mrs. McArthur deliver first-rate craft sauces that pack quite a bit of heat.
Craft salsas have become quite common lately, and when I find someone who makes them locally, I try to give them my support. The sauces from Mrs. McArthur (aka Lady McArthur, aka The Pepper Lady) fall into that category, and she offers some that will really light you up! She makes her products in the town of Dobbin, Texas and she has a booth at the Texas Renaissance Festival where you can sample much of what she has to offer. She also sells these at other fairs and you can purchase them online at her website. Here is a rundown of three that I have bought, with each packing some notable heat: Vampire’s Bane: This is a salsa for lovers of garlic, or should I say fanatics of the bud? It would be inaccurate to say this has a strong garlic flavor and much more on point to say that it punches you in the mouth with the garlic. But it also brings a nice, tomatoey richness with some tang to keep the garlic from completely dominating. Along with that, it has a fair amount of sweetness, but that acts as a counterbalance to the other bold flavors. In addition, there's a little bit of a zing from the cider vinegar, with the onion and seasonings giving it a nice finish. The large amount of garlic used actually gives the salsa a horseradish-like taste, and this would work well as a cocktail sauce or to give a nice boost to a tartar sauce. Heat-wise, this starts at Medium on my scale then quickly works its way up beyond hot. It does not quite get to the Fiery level, but after you have had a few bites of this one, your mouth will be on fire. Note that she does make her salsas in small batches so the heat may vary, but each jar I have tried (I’ve been through three of these so far) has definitely brought the burn. And the garlic will certainly keep you safe from vampires for an extended time. (Also note that this is not recommended for a first date!) Day Walker: When you look at the ingredients for this salsa, they are basically the same as Vampire’s Bane, but with smoked jalapenos instead of regular jalapenos. So it delivers that blast of garlic along with the tomato tang and sweetness, but it has some smoke as well. I don’t know if that cuts the garlic taste, but the bud is not quite as strong in this mixture. For that reason, it is my favorite of the ones that I have bought from Mrs. McArthur for just eating on chips. The garlic does not overwhelm and all of the flavors balance out quite nicely. As for the heat, it is just as hot as the Vampire’s Bane. The average mortal will shrink away from this one (as will vampires), but us chiliheads should love it! Phoenix Fire: This salsa starts out with a nice, tomatoey tang and some sweetness to finish that off. It also has a good peppery kick with plenty of richness and a nice depth of flavor. Habaneros are the main chili pepper, though I don’t detect the distinct flavor that usually comes from those pods. Still, this is actually one of the best salsas I have ever had taste-wise. But . . . buyer beware! The first couple of bites have a kick, but they don't seem too bad. Then you start to notice that your mouth is on fire, and that hangs around for a while. If you keep eating without bringing in something to temper the heat, you are definitely headed for some pain! This gets beyond Fiery on my scale and is headed for the Insane level. It definitely packs a lot of heat and should be considered for professionals only! As an additional warning, this is one of the few hot things that does cause me some stomach discomfort. Not too bad, and the pain is worth it, but be warned in advance. The average mortal should avoid this and even chiliheads will find it challenging. I did some further looking around the website and apparently the Phoenix Fire is based on the same recipe as Mrs. McArthur’s Friendly Habanero and Hostile Habanero salsas. Obviously the Friendly is the most approachable with the Hostile amping things up and the Phoenix Fire taking it near the Insane level as I mention above (it has forty times the habaneros that are in the Friendly version). I recall tasting the Hostile Habanero while at her booth at the Renaissance Festival and liking it, and I plan on going back for a jar or two of that. Mrs. McArthur also makes jams and relishes (she got her start making jalapeno jelly), and those are quite good as well. If you happen to be at Ren Fair--which goes through the end of November--definitely stop by her booth and give her sauces a try. Or you can contact her to see if she has a schedule of other festivals she will be attending. If neither of those work, you can order directly from her website. Just pay attention to the heat levels because her hottest salsas definitely bring the burn! Bottom Line: Melinda's Pepper Sauce Challenge has a nice selection of that company's sauces that offer a good combination of heat and flavor.
It is the time of year when people are buying gifts for friends and family, and as I have said in a previous post, please don't buy those generic hot sauce gift sets if you are getting something for someone who likes spicy foods. There are plenty of better options out that as I have been covering with my spicy gifts posts, and one of those is the Melindas Pepper Sauce Challenge set. I already mentioned that company's sauces in a post last week, but I wanted to focus on this particular set because you might be able to get a heck of a deal on it in Sam's right now (mine currently has quite a number of sets available). I have seen several configurations of the same set, but the one currently available at Sam's Wholesale Club for under ten bucks includes 5 oz bottles the following six sauces: Jalapeno, Cayenne, XXXtra Hot Habanero, Red Savina, Ghost Pepper, and Scorpion. Amazon currently has a similar set available, but it subs in Chipotle and Extra Hot Habanero for Cayenne and the XXXtra Hot Habanero. Melinda's sauces have long been a favorite of mine, especially the ones made from habanero. Their sauces have a nice vinegar tang that is not overpowering and is followed by a nice burst of flavor from the main pepper used to spice it up. The Jalapeno sauce in this set delivers a good green pepper taste. The Cayenne sauce is a nice Louisiana-style mix. The XXXtra Hot Habanero has always been one of my favorites as it delivers on the taste of its main pepper and it is not insanely hot (though it has quite a kick). The Red Savina, Ghost Pepper, and Scorpion sauces all amp up the heat as expected, but still have some good taste as well (the Ghost Pepper one has long been one of my favorite fiery sauces). I have heard complaints that Melinda's changed its recipes a while back, and that is possible when it moved its sauce-making operations to Costa Rica. I seem to recall the sauce was a bit sweeter at one point, but their products still deliver on the flavor and I consider them one of the better mainstream sauce-makers. This set is certainly better than those generic sauce compilations you will find out there (which are likely made in China), and if you have a Sam's near you then you may be able to get this set for a heck of a deal right now. If you can't find it there, it is available online (though somewhat more costly), or you can look around for other craft sauce options that lovers of spicy foods should enjoy. (You can find a few suggestions here.)
