Spicy Food News: Popeyes Brings Back Its Bone-In Wings with Spicy New Flavors, Lay’s Adds Game Day Inspired Chips with a Kick, and More

Popeyes Is Winging It for Game Day

Football fans take note: Popeyes is bringing back their bone-in wing lineup just in time for the season to start. The new batch offers “a new mild marinated base for fans to choose how they want to level up the heat – mild or spicy!” In addition to bringing back three of their signature sauces, the chicken-slinger is adding four new dry rubs. Following is the rundown from the press release:

Signature Hot: Tossed in Cajun hot sauce and finished with a touch of sweetness, it’s flavorful, balanced and unmistakably Popeyes.

Signature Sweet ‘N Spicy: Coated in a glaze featuring chili, garlic and ginger, delivering a flavorful kick.

Signature Honey BBQ: Bold, rich and tangy, this flavor brings the classic taste of barbeque in a sauced wing.

NEW Ghost Pepper Dry Rub: Dusted in a savory blend of classic Louisiana seasonings and fiery Ghost Pepper; that same flavor you love, now in a dry rub.

NEW Lemon Pepper Dry Rub: Topped with lemon pepper seasoning, this is our take on a sweet and tangy classic.

NEW Garlic Parm Dry Rub: A rich and savory blend of parmesan cheese and aromatic garlic tossed onto a golden-brown wing.

NEW Buffalo Dry Rub: Classic buffalo flavor coats a crisp wing to create the perfect mix of flavor and heat.

Prices start at $5.99 for a 6-piece order of wings. And, these are on loan from Limited-Time-Only-Ville, so you will want to try them sooner rather than later, otherwise you might miss out.

Lay’s Kicks Up Its Chips for Football Season

Lay's new flavors: Hot Sauce, Load Nachos, Cheesy Buffalo Dip

In another announcement that will appeal to football fans, this well-known chip producer is introducing three new flavors with a kick, all of which are “inspired by game day classics”. These will include the Lay’s Hot Sauce variety which is a team-up with Frank’s Redhot, the Wavy Lay’s Load Nachos which replicate the experience of eating nachos on a chip, and also the Kettled Cooked Cheesy Buffalo Dip which is inspired by that favorite kicked-up dip. These are supposed to be available wherever Lay’s chips are sold, though I tend to have some trouble tracking down these new flavors. I have had some success finding some of them at Walmart, Target, or Kroger, and often Subway will have the specialty flavors available in the individual-sized bags. These are limited editions and will probably disappear from shelves by the end of Fall.

Frank’s RedHot Gets an Asian Twist

Frank's RedHot New Korean BBQ sauce

Frank’s is giving you another reason to “put that sh#t on everything” with their new Korean BBQ flavor.  Here is the description from the website:

Thicker than traditional hot sauce and saucy with a smooth drizzle, this blend of soy sauce, garlic, sweet pear juice, and a touch of Frank’s RedHot heat is ready to bring a pop of savory heat to all your favorite foods.

it comes in a 12 oz squeeze bottle and they claim the sauce is medium level heat.  This also appears to be a permanent addition to their lineup and you can find it where other Frank’s Redhot varieties are sold.

Kroger Adds a Spicy New Chip

Kroger adds Buffalo Wing chips

Kroger is getting in on the game day fun as well, adding a spicy new flavor to its store brand of chips. Here is the description of their new Buffalo Wings chips from the press release:

Bringing all the heat to game day, these rippled chips pack an unbeatable buffalo-flavored punch – no wet napkins or saucy fingers required.

They are also adding two more flavors that blend well with the football season: Pigs in a Blanket and Mozzarella Sticks. But these are limited time only and will likely disappear by the time the playoffs roll around.
