Weathered Souls Brewing Company is a local brewery that has been around for four years now and has become a popular destination for San Antonio residents. They offer an ever-changing lineup of craft beers (some of the best in the city), and the food they have available to pair with those brews is provided by another San Antonio original, South BBQ & Kitchen. Among the many tasty options on the menu is an item that should appeal to lovers of spicy food, the amped-up burger referred to as the Hot Boi.

Following is the description of the Hot Boi from the menu: “Fresh ground prime Angus brisket, seared in buffalo sauce & topped with Oaxaca cheese & jalapeño ranch on a butter toasted potato roll.”

There are lots of really good burgers out there, but this is one that takes ground beef to the next level. This is not just your standard 80/20 mix, this is Angus that comes from the brisket cut of the cow, not the typical meat just for a burger. Because of that, the patty is very beefy with a nice richness to it, and it has just a hint of smokiness in the background. It is pretty salty as well, but not at all in a bad way. The salt does not overwhelm and actually enhances the flavor.

The sauce adds a little bit of a tang that is followed by a nice bite of heat. It is not a flaming hot burger, coming in a little higher than medium heat, but the spice is definitely there and helps to enhance the burger experience. There is not a lot more added to this burger with the cheese and jalapeno ranch giving a little extra creaminess, but not masking the flavor of that delicious meat. A few pickles might have been nice to give it an extra pop, but don’t take that as a complaint. If I get this burger exactly as it is every time, I am perfectly happy.

There is no calorie information for the burger (local restaurants are not required to provide that), but this is not one of those toppings-heavy gut bombs that the chain restaurants produce, so I’m going to guess it comes in somewhere around the 600 cal range. But it is plenty filling and is paired up with a bag of Zapp’s kettle chips.

I don’t see the Hot Boi on the menu at South BBQ & Kitchen’s downtown location, so I believe this is an exclusive they do for Weathered Souls. And it pairs perfectly well with the beer selection. A frosty West Coast Double IPA (currently on tap) goes quite nicely with the burger. As does the Who’s Got the Juice Now? New England IPA (also currently on tap). And they have plenty of other options to whet your whistle amongst the suds that they brew right there on the premises.

You may have seen one or two beer selections from Weathered Souls on tap at restaurants in San Antonio and the surrounding area, most likely the West Coast IPA. But be sure to visit the brewery itself because it has more than a dozen craft beers (and ciders as well) ready to pour at any time and a great selection of food. And lovers of spicy food (as well as burger connoisseurs) will definitely want to seek out the Hot Boi.

Weathered Souls Brewing Company is located at 606 Embassy Oaks – Suite 500 in San Antonio, Texas. You can visit their website to see what is currently on tap and what is on the menu. And I recommend that you get yourself there as soon as possible!
