Salsa Finds: 2 Sisters’ Fiesta Salsa

Bottom Line: This fresh-made salsa delivers an explosion of flavor with a nice amount of zing.

Are you looking for a good jar of salsa? Then just mosey on down to your local market and grab a bottle of 2 Sisters’ Salsa made right there in Louisiana by people who know what salsa should taste like. Wait! What?

Salsa from Lewsiana? Who ever heard of such a thing?

It may seem like an odd place to make a Mexican condiment, but after chowing down on a jar of this stuff, I can tell you that them Cajuns know what they’re doing. They claim to make their salsa from “authentic Cajun recipes”, but this would be perfectly well suited for the table of any Tex-Mex joint here in the Lone Star State.

They have five varieties to choose from (more on those below), and I decided to give the Fiesta salsa a try. It is made with chunky tomatoes, purple onions, and “just a hint” of cilantro and has a sweetness and smokiness to it along with a bit of a tang. The salt comes through as well, but just enough to balance the sweet. It also has a richness to it as well a very fresh taste. The tomatoes are the main driving force of the flavor, but the spices and chilis are in there as well. This is definitely not just bland some industrial salsa made in mega vats (though they do use pretty big vats) as it has a fresh taste that you don’t usually get straight out of the jar.

Heat-wise, this barely makes it above the mild level, but that’s okay. That means this salsa can pair with quite a lot of dishes, and I find it be particularly good with breakfast tacos (or breakfast burritos for Southwesterners) because I am not usually looking for a lot of heat first thing in the morning. Of course, you can amp up the heat if you want by adding a drop or two of your favorite hot sauce (might I recommend Dave’s Insanity Sauce?). But as it is, this salsa is quite tasty with just the right amount of zing.

2 Sisters has five total varieties which includes Original, Jalapeno, Honey, and Verde. They come in 16 oz jars and their website also has 32 oz jars available for sale. I stumbled across this salsa in one of my favorite local grocery chains Arlans. According to their website, you can also find it in Kroger, Walmart, Piggly Wiggly, Specs, and more. Unfortunately, HEB (which pretty much owns the grocery market in San Antonio) does not carry 2 Sisters’ Salsa, so I have to pick it up when I am out of town.

There are a lot of salsas on the shelves in the grocery stores, some of which offer a passable condiment, some of which kick up their game to the next level. 2 Sisters’ Salsa definitely falls in the latter category, and I recommend picking up a jar if you see it on the shelf. I will be checking out their other varieties at some point in the future, so watch for a follow-up post on this Cajun salsa company.
