Spicy Snacks: Doritos Spicy Nacho Dip

Bottom Line: Doritos Spicy Nacho Dip is pretty good for a canned cheese sauce and it brings a bit of a kick.

The big game day is coming up and it is time to start stocking up on snacks to satisfy your munchies while the players are out there fighting for the championship. And if you are looking for snacks that have a kick, there are plenty of options to choose from. (In fact, watch for a post next week with some suggestions.) And if you have chips, you will probably want some dip as well, so the new Doritos Spicy Nacho Dip has you covered.

That is pretty much what the name suggests, a cheese sauce for dipping that is kicked up with nacho cheese seasoning and just a bit of heat. And it comes in its own convenient little bowl that can be easily popped into the microwave to warm it up. Or if you prefer to eat the dip without heating, that works as well.

The cheese is pretty much the standard nacho cheese sauce you expect from a can. It’s nothing gourmet, and it doesn’t beat homemade queso, but for quick and easy munching it works out perfectly fine. The seasoning is similar to that used on nacho cheese Doritos, though with a bit of a kick. It pairs well with chips as you would expect, but also goes well with fresh veggies like celery, broccoli, and carrots (or one of my favorites:  fresh jalapenos cut in quarters length-wise). Probably my only complaint about the dip is that it is heavy on the salt. You pretty much expect that with this type of thing, but that salt taste really dominates, especially when eating it with fresh veggies.

Heat-wise, this comes at the Mild level on my scale or maybe just a touch higher. This is not going to set your mouth on fire, but you can tweak it as necessary by adding some extra hot sauce to kick up the heat. I find that a good habanero sauce goes quite well with this sort of cheese dip and I would recommend Melinda’s XXXTra Hot or Sontava.

As far as the calories go . . . I’m guessing you’re not really counting those if you are munching on this during the game. But if you are paying attention, a serving of two tablespoons is only 40 calories. If you pair that with fresh veggies, then this actually works out as a low-calorie and low-carb snack. (Just don’t spend too much time reading the ingredients. What exactly is disodiuminosinate or sodium ascorbate?)

This is a new addition to the Doritos line of dips, and they have also released a Cool Ranch version. They run about five bucks per can, but if you watch for sales (and there certainly will be some before the game) you might be able to do a little better. I don’t believe these are pegged as limited-time-only items, and I am guessing they will stick around as long as people keep buying them. Because once the Super Bowl is over, there are plenty of other games to follow which still demand munchies.
