Bottom Line: The Spicy Chicken Fries from Burger King are nuggets in a different shape, but they do bring the heat.
Chicken, chicken, and more chicken. We have chicken wings, chicken breasts, chicken nuggets, chicken chips (!), and we also have chicken fries. And all of them are spiced up because the restaurant industry thinks that chicken is the only thing it can bring heat to. I’m not complaining about all the spicy chicken because they are doing a good job with it, but it would be nice to have more variety when it comes to dishes that have a kick. But for not, it’s mostly chicken.
Burger King’s Chicken Fries have been around for a while, and have proven quite popular, and now they have come out with a “new” spicy version. Not that Spicy Chicken Fries are new–they offered those a while back–but the latest batch they are frying up has ghost pepper seasoning which seems to be similar to what BK used in its Ghost Pepper Chicken Nuggets from a couple of years ago (more on those here). And that’s a good thing. You may notice that the box has a rather wicked looking chicken opposed to the bird with a milder temperament on the regular version.
The meat in these is the same ground chicken used in their nuggets, just formed into longer strips. The fries have a good crust which is nicely seasoned, but there is not much crunch. There is a peppery taste to the seasoning and a fair amount of salt, but not to the point that the latter is overpowering. Basically, these are just nuggets with a kick that have been put into a taffy pull to make them long and thin. The one disadvantage of their shape is that the meat to breading ratio is in the favor of the latter, but since the breading is quite good, that still works out okay. And they are plenty of fun for dipping.
As far as the heat, these do deliver. The first bite does not seem too bad, but the burn builds as you continue to eat. These pass the Medium level on my scale and they are on the way to Hot, though they don’t quite get all the way there. They won’t send you running for a fire extinguisher, but for a drive thru item they are pretty good on the heat. Chiliheads should enjoy them, but the average mortal may find that these Chicken Fries push the boundaries.
Calorie-wise, an order of nine fries only comes up to 250 cals. That’s less than a medium order of French fries or onion rings (both around 330 cals), so you can justify ordering these as your side. Just don’t be getting them along with that Double Whopper, otherwise you will be leveling up on your pants size!
As is typical of Burger King and the fast food industry in general, these are here for a limited time only. Despite the fact that these will likely prove to be a popular expansion of the Chicken Fries offerings, the execs at these companies continue to play the game yanking items off the menu no matter how many people buy them. So get yours now because you don’t know how long they will stick around.

My Husband and I love the Spicy Chicken Fries. They have a good level of heat without being too hot for anyone that doesn’t really want something that is spicy but think they do. We like the balance and it’s what brings us to Burger King. Love the burgers as well but we can get burgers lots of places closer to our home.
