Review: Chorizo and Egg Wrap from Dunkin

Bottom Line: The Chorizo and Egg Wrap from Dunkin delivers a satisfying and tasty breakfast item with a little kick of heat.

When it comes to breakfast, there are not too many spicy options available if you are looking for something on the run. But the fast food industry throws an item or two on the menu from time to time–usually only available for a limited basis–and I will give them a try if I catch them while they are still around. Dunkin recently released a new Wraps lineup, and the Chorizo and Egg Wrap sounded like something that might deliver a little kick first thing in the morning. So I stopped by to check it out.

That wrap comes with chorizo, scrambled eggs, mildly spiced cheese sauce, vegetables, and black beans, and those are all tucked into a red pepper lavash (more on that below). They also have a Chicken and Roasted Pepper Wrap which I have not tried yet. That comes with chicken, roasted peppers, and cheese, rolled up in the lavash.

Let’s start out with that flat bread which offers something new for the drive thru. Lavash is a thin flatbread that is usually leavened and traditionally baked in a tandoor (though I doubt Dunkin is using that clay oven to mass produce its wraps). It is similar to a tortilla, but with a bit more flakiness, and it is common in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. It offers an interesting change of pace and works quite well to hold all the ingredients together in the Chorizo and Egg Wrap.

The lavash has some char to it and seems a bit on the tough side at first, but it still delivers some good texture. The cheese sauce is the first thing you taste after the flatbread, and that is followed by the eggs, blending well together while delivering some creaminess. The chorizo makes its presence noticeable after a bite or two with good richness and a kick of spice. They are actually quite generous with the chorizo, and the veggies work well with that to add more depth to the flavor. The taste of the black beans is not very evident, but they do bring some grittiness. Overall, this is a decent breakfast wrap that delivers a nice combination of flavors and that should fill you up.

As for the heat, you feel a little tingle right away, but it never gets above the Mild level on my scale. The spiciness is definitely evident as you are chomping through the wrap, but at just the right level because I don’t like too much heat with my morning coffee (and I will be having my cup of joe with breakfast). If you want to kick this up, a few drops of Tabasco, Cholula, or Sriracha would be just right. But I was happy with the wrap as is.

Calorie-wise, this comes in at 410 cals which is not bad for the drive thru. You can even justify adding on an order of their hash browns which only tack on another 110 cals (and costs less than a buck-fifty). But if you add a donut, you’re going to need to schedule some extra time at the gym. Price-wise, the wrap comes in under five bucks which has become about standard for breakfast sandwiches/wraps these days. If you have the Dunkin rewards app, you can get it for three bucks with the purchase of a drink in a July promotion, and that is a pretty good deal in a world where fast food no longer necessarily means cheap food. Note that these are pre-made and heated up in a convection oven when you order, but Starbucks does the same thing and charges you even more. (The donuts are not even made at the Dunkin stores anymore.)

Dunkin dropped the “Donuts” from its name because it features much more than just doughy, sweet treats these days. (Fun fact: Dunkin is the most popular bagel chain in the country.) The wraps are of course visiting from Limited-Time-Only-Ville, and on my most recent visit I noticed that they were not available (good thing I was just stopping by for coffee and donut). I am assuming that they proved more popular than expected, and the stores ran out of supplies. (Or they hired one of those marketing “geniuses” from Taco Bell.) Hopefully, the wraps will be back soon and maybe even prove popular enough to join the regular menu.
