Review: Spicy BK Royal Crispy Wrap from Burger King

Bottom Line: The BK Royal Crispy Wraps from Burger King should make fans of the discontinued McDonald’s wrap happy, and the spicy version delivers a kick.

Snack wraps were once a popular–and slightly more healthy–option from McDonald’s that you could find on their menu from 2006 to 2016. These consisted of several variations of a chicken tender wrapped in a tortilla, and despite the fact that they were well-liked by customers, the chain discontinued them because they were more labor-intensive to assemble (read more about that here). And even though fans of the wraps have petitioned for their return, the chain has not brought them back to the menu (though you can still find them at Micky D’s in Canada and England). All of that is a lead-up to the fact that Burger King is paying attention to what customers of its competition are asking for and putting just that on the menu.

The King has recently introduced three varieties of what it calls the BK Royal Crispy Wrap, and McDonald’s customers may be redirecting to that drive-thru. The basic wrap includes a crispy fried chicken tender with lettuce, tomato, and royal sauce. The honey mustard version is the same with . . . well . . honey mustard sauce. For the spicy version, the tender is coated in a triple pepper spicy glaze and it comes with a spicy sauce. Considering the name of this blog, you figure out which one I chose to get.

The chicken is tender and the crust is well-seasoned with a kick, but there is not much crispiness. These are coated with that same glaze as their Fiery Nuggets (more on those here), which doesn’t seem much like a glaze but delivers some good flavor. A bigger piece of chicken would be nice seeing as the tender I got barely filled up half of the wrap (we’ll call the rest of it a veggie wrap), but the McDonald’s version had the same issue.

The sauce offers a bit of tang along with some creaminess and a touch of sweetness. And, along with the seasoning from the chicken, it helps to kick things up. The veggies are fresh (for the drive thru) and work out well enough. The tortilla is nothing special–standard store-bought–but it holds everything together well enough.

BK does do a good job of spicing things up and this wrap does have somewhat of a bite which comes from the combination of the seasoning and the sauce. It doesn’t quite make it to Medium on my scale, but it is definitely above Mild. If you ask them to add on some jalapenos as well, that will kick things up even more.

Nutrion-wise, these come in at 390 calories which is a bit high for something with “snack” in its name. You will be tempted to get two of these, but that will really push you over the edge, especially if you get a side. But if you get one and a small order of fries (320 cals) or even better a small order of onion rings (150 cals) you are not doing too bad. And at $2.99 for one of these wraps (in my area), they definitely will not break the bank.

These snack wraps are on loan from Limited-Time-Only-Ville, so they could disappear at some point. But if they divert enough people from the McDonald’s drive thru (and BK is definitely trying to put a dent in the business of its main competitor), maybe they will get elevated to the permanent menu. I suggest giving them a try while they are available, though, because you know how the fast food establishments love to yank things from the menu.
