Review: Whataburger Jalapeno Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich

Bottom Line: The Jalapeno Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich from Whataburger delivers a good, country-style breakfast on the go with a bit of a kick.

Breakfast has been on the menu lately as more and more of the chains have been adding morning items that bring some kick. Texas hamburger slinger Whataburger is no stranger to starting off the day with some spice as they have previously offered items like the Spicy Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit, and a staple on their menu is the Chorizo Egg and Cheese Taquito. But just recently, they have kicked up their biscuits by bringing back the jalapeno and cheddar version. And they have used those to make some pretty tasty biscuit sandwiches.

The biscuit is the main feature here and you can substitute that on any of their regular biscuit sandwich combos. I got the sausage egg and cheese version, but you can do bacon egg and cheese or just sausage and cheese or sausage and egg or sausage only or bacon only or . . . well . . . you get the idea.

Whataburger is another of the fast food chains like Popeyes and KFC that has figured out how to make a really good, country-style biscuit for the drive thru. (And apparently McDonalds has cracked the code on that as well, more on that here). It is buttery and flaky and oh so decadent. Definitely not something your doctor will recommend to start the day, but your tummy will be happy. The spicy version has a little bit of the cheddar taste in there and a hint of the jalapeno, but mostly this is just about the luscious biscuit. They crack a fresh egg for the sandwich and pair that with a good, savory country-style sausage patty with a hint of sage coming through (think Jimmy Dean). The slice of American cheese adds a mild creaminess and works generally well with breakfast offerings. And this is a sizeable sandwich that will certainly fill you up.

Heat-wise, this barely comes up to Mild on my scale. There is a little bit of a kick in there, and the biscuit by itself may have more heat, but the ingredients of the sandwich counterbalance the spice so that not much comes through. You will want to add grilled or pickled jalapenos (which are sixty five cents extra) to this if you are wanting some burn with your morning coffee. But it works out okay for me as is because I am not usually looking for too much heat first thing in the morning.

As for the nutrition . . . well . . . this is not something you should be eating every day. The biscuit sandwich itself totals to 725 calories with 54g of fat and a whopping 1610mg of sodium. If you add on those hashbrown sticks, that’s another 190 calories and you better plan on just a small salad for lunch and a long session in the gym. But for a splurge once in a while, this is definitely a tasty and filling breakfast with a bit of a kick.

The jalapeno cheddar biscuits are back for the dreaded limited time only, so they will disappear at some point.  (Though apparently people liked these so much that they previously put up a petition for their return.) So I recommend giving them a try while still available because Whataburger does a good job of baking them up. The sandwich runs $4.09 by itself and $6.29 for the combo with hashbrowns and coffee which is not too bad for the drive thru these days. And while it may be an indulgence, it will definitely satisfy your hunger first thing in the morning.
