Quick Review: Mi Tienda Habanero Mayonesa

Bottom Line: The Mi Tienda Habanero Mayo delivers a good version of the condiment that really brings the heat.

HEB regulars have certainly noticed products with the Mi Tienda label on the shelves and may consider it one of several house brands, but it actually got its start as a store designed to serve the Hispanic community of Houston. The products available with that name are designed to celebrate the traditional Mexican flavors and dishes that many people across Texas have learned to love. I previously reviewed several of the Mi Tienda salsas (more on that here), and I also picked up a bottle of their Habanero Mayonesa (mayonnaise). That one warns on the front of the bottle that the heat level is at Hot, and for once, a grocery store product actually delivers on its promise!

This is a pretty thick mayonnaise, and it does not have the sweetness or tang you usually expect from that condiment. It does have some acidity to it along with a nice creaminess. It also brings a fair amount of saltiness, but not to the point that it overpowers, and it has a good peppery kick. You don’t taste the distinct habanero flavor which can have some floral notes and fruitiness, but you know the chili is there from the heat. I would put this right at Hot on my scale, and it is definitely going to kick up anything it is added to! I really enjoyed it, and this is also something I plan on having in the fridge on a regular basis from now on.

Take note that this is not a low-fat mayonnaise. It clocks in at 100 calories for a tablespoon and all of that comes from fat. So go easy when you are spreading it on, in part because of the heat and also because of the amount of calories it is adding.

You can find it on the same aisle as the other mayonnaise selections and it sells between three and four bucks for an 11 oz bottle (I had a coupon for a dollar off). They also do a Jalapeno mayo, and I will be trying that at some point as well as several more of the Mi Tienda products.
