Quick Review: Texas Whopper Jr. from Burger King
Bottom Line: The Texas Whopper Jr. from Burger King delivers a decent fast-food burger, but not much heat.
Burger King keeps mixing things up to try and convince people to head to the drive thru, and one of their latest specialty items is the Texas Whopper. This “Texas-sizes” their iconic burger, adding American cheese, bacon, jalapeños, and mustard to the fixins you find on the standard Whopper. They offer this as a single and double, as well as the Impossible Meat version and the Whopper Jr. Since I am keeping a close eye on my calories lately, I went with the latter version, though I left off the mayo because it has no business being on a burger, and it saves me 70 cals.
The Whopper and the Whopper Jr. are definitely good fast-food burgers, with the char-grilled taste of the meat and the usually fresh vegetables. The main additions to the Texas version work out pretty well, with the cheese offering some creaminess and a touch of sharpness, while the bacon brings a hint of smoke and a pop of salt. The jalapeños were pretty sparse (there’s not much room to add many on the Whopper Jr. version), but they bring some vinegary tang and a touch of heat. They also combine well with the mustard to bring a bit more burn.
But despite the positive addition of those last two ingredients, the heat on this burger does not even make it to Mild on my scale. If you get the Whopper version of this sandwich, you can double up on the jalapeños (for a slight surcharge), and that might kick things up some more. But don’t expect this one to set your mouth on fire.
Nutrition-wise, this burger runs 420 cals, which is not bad for the drive-through. And if you hold the mayo (which you should), that takes off another 70 cals, and you can add a small side without worrying too much (the onion rings are a good choice at 320 cals). This sells for around five bucks in my area, which is a bit on the pricey side for fast food, but not terrible. The Texas Whoppers are available for the expected limited time only, but you can rebuild one yourself through customization. Just expect it to cost more if you go that route.
