The Chicken Sandwich Wars: Pimento Crunchwich from Golden Chick

Bottom Line: The Pimento Crunchwich from Golden Chick does not deliver a lot of heat, but it still stands out next to the competition as a heck of a good chicken sandwich.

Golden Chick is a Texas-based chain known for its fried chicken, chicken tenders, fried catfish, luscious rolls, and more. Those who follow this site on a regular basis (thanks for your support!) know that I have a preference for this chicken slinger, and I keep an eye on their menu for any new spicy offerings. I stopped by just recently and noticed that they have added a new chicken sandwich with a kick, and I decided to give that a try.

Here is what the Pimento Crunchwich includes: a crunchy chicken breast, creamy pimento spread, spicy jalapeño crisps, signature Lotta Zing® sauce, thick, crispy pickles, all stuffed into their extra-large buttery yeast roll. The sandwich sells for $5.99 in my area, and you can get a combo with a drink and side for $8.99.

Golden Chick puts out some darn good chicken sandwiches, highlighted by that oh-so-soft and buttery bun. This new version starts off with a sizeable breast filet that is tender, juicy, and well-seasoned throughout. There is definitely more meat than breading, but there is still a decent crunch to the crust. The pickles are plentiful and bring that nice tang. The pimento cheese delivers some creaminess and sharpness, but not a whole lot of the expected pimento cheese taste. It seems more like a sauce or spread than a thick portion of the cheesy mixture, and maybe that’s because it blends in with that Lotta Zing sauce. The crispy jalapeños get lost in the mix, but they seem to add some heat. And finally, the sweetness from that roll gives each bite a good finish.

As for the heat, this barely gets to Mild on my scale—but to be fair, they don’t advertise this as a spicy Pimento Crunchwich. The only items bringing the heat are the crispy jalapeños and the Lotta Zing sauce, and those are countered by the mildness of the pimento cheese. I chose to order the sandwich as-is, but next time I will ask for the Wicked breast filet (kicked up with Lotta Zing seasoning) to see if that amps up the heat. In any case, despite a few of my nitpicks above, this is a heck of a good chicken sandwich and certainly worth a trip to the drive-thru.

They don’t give the calorie info for this sandwich because it is a limited-time-only item, but I’m going to guess it’s pushing 600 cals, if not more. And I can never pass on their perfectly fried and tasty okra, so that adds another 317 cals to the mix. But I’ll schedule some extra time at the gym, because this is worth the splurge.

$5.99 for the sandwich by itself is a bit on the high side these days, but for three bucks extra you can get the combo, which works out to a pretty good drive-thru deal compared to the competition. The Pimento Crunchwich is on loan from Limited-Time-Only-Ville, so I would advise paying a visit soon if it sounds tempting. Golden Chick is in Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, and you can check for a location near you on their website.
