Bottom Line: The Fo Sho Taco from Torchy’s Tacos is packed to the brim with tasty veggies and delivers quite a kick.
Torchy’s Tacos is not a place you go for standard Tex-Mex or authentic Mexican food. This establishment, which started as a food truck in Austin, is known for experimenting with the taco experience rather than following traditions. And as they say on their website, they put together some “Damn Good” tacos.
I had not been to Torchy’s in a while but recently stopped by and was tempted by a new taco on the menu (new to me at least) called the Fo Sho. Here’s what comes with that one: avocado, refried pinto beans, Mexican rice, grilled onions and peppers, grilled corn relish, crispy onions, and cilantro, with a side of Diablo sauce on a corn tortilla.
That Diablo sauce makes itself apparent right away with its tartness, sweetness, and pleasant tang (you can read my review of that sauce here). But there is plenty more going on in this meatless taco, as it is packed to the brim (and each bite leads to tasty debris falling into the basket—be sure to get some chips on the side to scoop all that up). The avocado brings some creaminess and works quite well with the refried beans, which add some earthiness. That corn relish adds some additional sweetness along with a bit of tang. The grilled onions and peppers are cooked just enough so that they still have some texture along with great flavor. The cilantro adds a nice herby pop, and the tortilla appears to be freshly made and does a good job of holding everything together. As a kicker, those crispy onions add just a little bit of extra texture to bump the experience up to the next level.
Most of the heat comes from the Diablo sauce, but that still gets the taco just above Medium on my scale and approaching Hot, depending on how much of the sauce you add. I believe that corn relish might bring some heat as well, but it is hard to tell once the Diablo takes over. You can go with one of their milder sauces if you want less heat (but why would you want that?), however, that Diablo really pairs well with the other ingredients in the taco.
Nutrition-wise, the Fo Sho is only 354 calories, according to the website. I wonder about that number, though, because this is one stuffed taco. And I am guessing that does not include the Diablo sauce, which is probably going to add 100 to 150 calories depending on how much you pour on. I’m not going to ask too many questions, though, because this is full of veggies and should count as healthy, right?
As mentioned above, Torchy’s Tacos started as a food truck in Austin, but it has since exploded into a nationwide chain that is currently in fifteen states beyond Texas. You can check for a location near you on their website, and there is certainly plenty to choose from on their menu. I highly recommend getting started with their Green Chile Queso, which has quite a kick. You can read my review of that here.
