Spicy Food News: Qdoba Queso Goes Apocalypto, Ro-Tel Adds Ghost Peppers, and More

Qdoba Kicks Up Its Queso

This Mexican-inspired chain is amping up its “amazing” signature queso to the next level and challenging you to “dip if you dare”. Here is the description from the website:

QUESO APOCALYPTO takes everything you love about QDOBA queso—rich, creamy, velvety gold—and boosts the heat with Salsa Roja, Habanero Salsa, Pickled Jalapeños, and Fiery Hot Crunchies.

This is available for a limited time only, so you will want to pay a visit soon if the new queso sounds tempting.

Ro-Tel Goes Xtra Hot

Ro-Tel, the company that has been canning tomatoes with green chilis since the 1940s, has added a spicy new version to its lineup. Referred to as “Xtra Hot,” it looks like this follows their standard recipe but with the addition of Ghost Peppers. I have only just heard about this from posts on social media, and I haven’t seen a press release on it, but the hot mixture of tomatoes and chilis is making its way to store shelves. Ro-Tel is, of course, famous for the chili con queso dip that combines a can of their tomatoes and chilis with Velveeta (you can find a recipe for that here). So if you come across a can of the Xtra Hot, you can really amp up the heat of your queso!

Burger King Will Be Trying Out a New Spicy Whopper

The King has unveiled the top three finalists in its Million Dollar Whopper Campaign, and one of those brings a kick.  Here is the description of that:

The Mexican Street Corn Whopper features ¼ lb. flame-grilled beef patty topped with street corn spread, lettuce, tomato, Southwest-seasoned tortilla crisps, and Mexican spicy queso—all on a toasted sesame seed bun.

These will not be hitting stores until around November, and customers will get the chance to vote on which on they prefer between the Mexican Street Corn Whopper, the Fried Pickle Ranch Whopper, and the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper (you can read about the other two here).

Taco Bell Adds a New Hot Sauce Packet and Brings Back Big Cheez-It Menu

Taco Bell is adding a new hot sauce to its lineup for a limited time starting this week. The Disha Hot™ Hot Sauce is based on a sauce made by musician Omar Apollo’s family, and according to the press release, it “packs a rich, smoky balance of heat and flavor in every drop”. It will be available to rewards members starting on September 24th and then nationwide on September 26th.

That chain will also be bringing back its Cheez-It menu, which includes the Big Cheez-It Crunchwrap Supreme and the Big Cheez-It Tostada (you can see my review of those here). These are available in stores now, but will disappear before too long, so make a trip to the drive-thru soon if you are craving Taco Bell combined with a Big Cheez-It (and maybe want to add some Disha Hot Sauce).
