Spicy Snacks: Spicy Dill Pickle Goldfish Crisps from Pepperidge Farm

Bottom Line: The Pepperidge Farm Spicy Dill Pickle Goldfish Crisps bring some good pickle taste along with some burn, and you will find them quite addicting.

Dill pickle flavor has become quite popular lately, though not necessarily related to brined cucumbers. It is being added to all sorts of items (even beer) and is showing up frequently in snacking selections. And while I am actually not a huge dill pickle fan (I like them but don’t find myself scarfing them down on a regular basis), I do like the flavor added to munchies, especially when it is spiced up. And Pepperidge Farm has done just that with its new Spicy Dill Pickle Goldfish Crisps.

Everybody knows about Goldfish crackers (the Frank’s RedHot version is really quite good), but the crisps put out recently out by this company offer a twist on those munchable fish. These are made with potatoes and flour, making them a cross between a potato chip and a Goldfish cracker, and they deliver a nice, light crunch. I have been addicted to the Cheddar flavor since they came out and have been waiting for a spicy option. Now, Pepperidge Farm has finally delivered on that.

The pickle kick hits right away with some vinegar pucker and a nice touch of dill. There is also some herbiness in there, along with a touch of garlic and just a bit of sweetness. They are not too heavy on the vinegar or the dill, so they have a nice balance and perfectly replicate the pickle experience. These are actually among the best of the spicy dill pickle snacks I have tasted, and they will become a regular in my pantry.

As for the heat, these do deliver a nice kick. You get a bite from them right away, and after eating several of the crackers, they get up to Medium on my scale—maybe a touch beyond. That’s pretty good for a snack from a major manufacturer, since they typically cater to the average consumer and veer toward mild heat. So not only do these have a good dill pickle flavor, but they bring some burn as well.

As a bonus, these crisps are relatively low in calories. A serving is 140 calories, which is about average for snacks, but that includes over forty pieces. I typically eat less than that and find my munchie fix satisfied, so I think I’m coming out ahead. Though they are pretty addicting, so sometimes I find myself reaching back into the bag for a few more.

I believe these are a permanent addition to the Goldfish Crisps lineup (which means they are permanent as long as sales hold up), so they should be around for a while.  And at around $3.50 for a bag in my area, that’s not bad for a snack item in the current inflation crunch (have you seen how much they are asking for some bags of chips lately?). Now, if they would only do the Frank’s RedHot version of these, we would be set!
