There’s a lot going on in the headlines today with war and pandemic and inflation and the latest shenanigans of the Kardashians. But some REAL BIG news has just dropped: The Mexican Pizza is coming back to Taco Bell!!!
Yes, indeed. The people have spoken and the Bell execs have learned their lesson. After removing that menu item back in Fall of 2020, there have been protests from customers and even an online petition, and now it will be coming back starting on May 19th (loyalty members can get it as early as the 17th).
Taco Bell removed that item in an attempt to streamline its processes during the pandemic when labor was often in short supply. Also, they claimed that the packaging was wasteful as the cardboard box that holds the Mexican Pizza was large and mostly specific to that item (it was also used for the Spicy Tostado which was tragically cut from the menu as well). But the pizza is a fan favorite, and the company has conceded to bringing it back, allegedly as a permanent menu item. (But is anything there really permanent there?)
Personally, the Mexican Pizza has never been a go-to item for me, and honestly I can’t remember the last time I ordered one. And it’s not particularly spicy, like most of the Bell’s food, but some Fire or Diablo sauce can fix that. But with this coming back, it should open the door for the return of one of my all-time favorites: the Spicy Tostada. That is one of the items which was on the original menu way back when they only had five selections (though it was called a Tostado and “spicy” wasn’t part of the name). With the tostada shells and the box back now, there’s no reason not to add it to the menu as well (hopefully still at a only a buck, though I am willing to shell out a little more if necessary). If only we could get the Enchirito back as well . . .
Also new on the Bell menu is the Steak White Hot Ranch Fries which is the latest variation on their Nacho Fries. That tops the fries with steak, nacho cheese, shredded cheese, tomatoes, reduced-fat sour cream (because you are really watching your fat intake when ordering these), and “white hot” Ranch sauce. They have a vegetarian version of these that substitute black beans for the steak, and they also wrap all this up in a burrito if you need it on the run. As with the Nacho Fries, these offerings will be heading back to limited-time-only-ville before too long.
And coming to a Whataburger drive-thru near you is the Spicy Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit (that’s a mouthful of words for a mouthful of a breakfast item). The Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit is a longtime fan favorite from this Texas burger chain (which is expanding throughout the country), and now they are kicking it up with some heat. It’s on one of those limited-time-only deals, so mosey on down to your local Whataburger and get one while you can. And I do mean just one, because at over 750 calories, you better be eyeing that small salad for lunch!
