This twist on the classic snack mix recipe delivers a holiday favorite with a quite a kick.

Ingredients:

2 Cups Chex Mix or Broken Up Triscuits

2 Cups Pita Chips (Broken Up)

2 Cups Cheese Crackers

2 Cups Pretzels

¾ Cup Unsalted Peanuts

2 Tablespoons Butter

1/3 Cup Sriracha Sauce

3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 to 2 Drops Extract Sauce (i.e., Dave’s Insanity Sauce)

2 Teaspoons Seasoned Salt

1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Melt the butter in a dish in the microwave until liquified, about 30 to 45 seconds. Mix in the sauces and seasonings until combined well.

Put the first five ingredients in a large, microwave-safe bowl. Pour on one-third of the sauce and stir until coated. Repeat that two more times.

Place the bowl in the microwave and heat for two minutes at high. Take the bowl out (careful, it could be hot!) and stir thoroughly. Repeat that three to four more times until the mix feels mostly dry. Lay out the mix on a cookie sheet on top of the oven and let it rest there for fifteen to thirty minutes to help it settle and dry fully.

The ingredients above are simply a starting point and I will see what I have in the pantry and adjust the recipe as needed. You can see from the picture that I had some Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and threw those in.  I also substituted puffed pita chips for regular. Other additions could include tortilla and/or corn chips, various crackers and nuts, and pretty much anything that sounds tasty to you.

The extract sauce is what gives it the “screaming” heat–medium to hot on my scale–but you can leave that out if you want a milder snack. You can also substitute another sauce like habanero or Tabasco depending on the heat level you want. If you don’t have or don’t want to use sriracha, a Louisianna-style sauce can be substitued. This recipe is easily adjustable depending on what you have available and is a great way to use up half-eaten bags of snacks and half-used bottles of hot sauce in the pantry.
